Overwatch 2 is now on Xbox Game Pass, and it comes with perks

Overwatch 2 skins: Cardboard Reinhardt, Turtleship D.Va, Cyberdragon Hanzo, Street Runner Genji, Bee Mercy, and Cleric Lifeweaver
Blizzard Entertainment

Blizzard Entertainment surprise dropped Overwatch 2 on Xbox Game Pass on Tuesday, despite the game being free to play and already on Xbox.

You might find this to be a strange addition, but as a Blizzard blog post specifies, this is more about encouraging players to link their Battle.net and Xbox accounts. As a reward, players that do so will receive six exclusive skins: Cardboard Reinhardt, Turtleship D.Va, Cyberdragon Hanzo, Street Runner Genji, Bee Mercy, and Cleric Lifeweaver. (The image of a Reinhardt in a cardboard suit is delightful.) Players will also get 30 Mythic Prisms that they can use in the Mythic Shop for other skins.

Blizzard also said that linked accounts gain access to Overwatch 2 shop cosmetics from the past three seasons — so seasons 9 to 11. This will update each season for linked Game Pass players. Finally, Blizzard is offering a 10% XP boost.

Players will have from September 17 until November 11 to link their accounts and get all the perks. The rewards will remain active as long as you have an Xbox Game Pass subscription. You can find instructions on how to connect the accounts in the blog post linked above or through this support article .

This announcement comes alongside an Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft crossover to celebrate the latter’s 20th anniversary. Players can potentially get the Sylvanas Windrunner Widowmaker, Lich King Reinhardt, Thrall Zenyatta, and Diamond Magni Torbjorn skins.

This is one of the many Game Pass/Activision Blizzard crossovers that have occurred since Microsoft successfully acquired the company for $69 billion in 2023. Diablo 4 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are available for Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass for Console subscribers. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the next addition, coming to the aforementioned Game Pass plans on the day it launches, October 25.

The Outer Worlds 2 already feels lightyears ahead of its predecessor
A person on an alien world in The Outer Worlds 2.

I'll let you in on a dirty little secret that I've kept quiet for years: I'm not all that big on The Outer Worlds. Despite the fact that Obsidian's Fallout-esque sci-fi RPG was a critical darling in 2019, I struggled to get into a groove with it despite liking so many of its individual parts. The social satire was there, and I loved the companions, but so much of its gameplay left me feeling cold. Maybe it was just the bland combat that put me off, or that the movement felt stiff, but I never saw it through to the end and figured I'd likely skip its eventual sequel.

Now after actually playing a slice of The Outer Worlds 2 following last week's Xbox Games Showcase, I'm singing a very different tune. Obsidian has seemingly been listening in on my internal monologue, because the major problems I had first game have seemingly been addressed here. The demo I played teased a huge leap forward for an RPG with great bones, reinventing the basic feel while still delivering what Obsidian does best.

Grounded 2 exists for one reason: fans wanted to ride the bugs
Kids stare down a giant bug in Grounded 2.

There were a lot of surprises at this year's Xbox Games Showcase, but few turned my head the way Grounded 2 did. I wasn't just shocked because it is Obsidian Entertainment's third game releasing in 2025 (behind Avowed and ahead of The Outer Worlds 2). I was more so surprised that the team made it at all. The first Grounded only hit early access in 2020 and enjoyed regular updates on its path to 1.0. It very much felt early for a full sequel to arrive. But it turns out that there's one very simple answer for why the team went full steam ahead: Its fans begged to ride the bugs.

Following the Xbox Games Showcase this past weekend, I played 30 minutes of Grounded 2 and spoke to Executive Producer Marcus Morgan about its origin. While the sequel doesn't change too much about the original based on my early play time, it does expand the world of Grounded by a significant degree. Those changes simply couldn't have fit into another update.

Everything announced at Xbox Games Showcase 2025: Black Ops 7, Persona 4, and more
A ninja stands in front of a lightning strike in Ninja Gaiden 4.

Following a killer State of Play and a dud of a Summer Game Fest, Xbox spun the game reveal wheel with its own live stream. The Xbox Games Showcase broadcasted today and it gave us a very clear picture of what the rest of the console's 2025 will look like, as well as its 2026. That was sorely needed, because we knew about a lot of games coming to Xbox but we didn't have many release dates for them. That changed a bit today, though we didn't see the games we expected.

The Outer Worlds 2 and Ninja Gaiden 4 got big release date reveals, and we learned a whole lot more about Clockwork Revolution. What we didn't see, though, was Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, or Perfect Dark. Those were some surprising omissions, but we still got plenty of surprises anyways. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Persona 4 is getting a remake, and Obsidian is launching a third game this year with Grounded 2. That was just the tip of the iceberg in what was a so-so showing for Xbox. Here's out rundown of every announcement.
