Fear Street: Prom Queen is the loose continuation of R.L. Stein’s teen horror franchise after Netflix pumped out three Fear Street flicks in 2021. You don’t need to have seen any of those to understand what’s happening in this throwback story to 1988. Teenager Lori Granger (India Fowler) is the focus here, and she’s tired of being a social outcast because everyone thinks her mother murdered her dad.

Lori is out to change everything by earning the prom queen title, even though her rival, Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza), isn’t going to simply let Lori take it from her. However, these young ladies have a much bigger problem than each other. A masked serial killer is methodically taking out victims at the prom, and at the rate things are going, either Lori or Tiffany could be next on the hit list.

Before they can even try to attempt that, Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) brings the world to the brink of war and manipulates Sam’s friend, Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), and other pawns to get his revenge on Ross.

Natalie Portman stars as Charlotte Purdue, a genius who is very unhappy with her life as a museum curator. So it’s just as well that her older brother, Luke Purdue (John Krasinski), just cost her that job by stealing a painting out from under nose.

The biggest box office flop of the year and one of the biggest ever, Better Man, grossed just over $20 million worldwide against a $110 million budget. The extraordinary loss is much more on marketing failures, however, than on the actual quality of the movie, which has received good reviews. Based on British pop star Robbie Williams’ rise, fall, and resurgence, Williams made the somewhat bizarre call to cast himself as a CGI monkey in the largely autobiographical film.

While the film is about the challenges of fame and success, the greatest irony is that Williams was nowhere near a big enough star to make a film like this in the first place.

Best new movies coming to theaters in 2024
Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

With this week's update, this roundup of the best new movies coming to theaters in 2024 comes to an end. The year's almost over! More importantly, there will be no major releases after December 25. However, four contenders on Christmas Day will attempt to stake out a place for themselves. We'd like to see Nosferatu do well, as it looks like a stylish horror film that's well-suited to be counterprogramming for everything else. But the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, has Oscar bait written all over it. The other two Christmas options are the erotic thriller Babygirl and the sports drama The Fire Inside.

Before we get to the Christmas box office, we'll have to see if Sonic the Hedgehog 3 or Mufasa: The Lion King can put a dent in the one-two-three punch of Moana 2, Wicked, and Gladiator II this weekend. Right now, the early projections have Sonic 3 taking in $60 million this weekend, well ahead of everything else.
