Judging by the actions of James Cameron’s wife, Avatar: Fire and Ash will be the filmmaker’s most emotional story on Pandora.

Cameron’s wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, managed to see a cut of Avatar: Fire and Ash , the upcoming third entry in the Avatar franchise. According to Cameron, the emotionality of Fire and Ash brought her to tears.

“My wife watched the whole thing from end to end. She had kept herself away from it, and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along. This was December 22nd,” Cameron told Empire . “She bawled for four hours.”

Cameron could not even receive proper feedback from her due to the waterworks.

“She kept trying to get her s*** back together so she could tell me specific reactions, and then she’d just tear up and start crying again,” Cameron said. “Finally, I’m like, ‘Honey, I’ve got to go to bed. Sorry, we’ll talk about it some other time.'”

When Cameron’s wife cries during a screening, it’s typically a good sign, as evidenced by her proven track record.

“She’s a pretty good bellwether,” Cameron said. “She called the ball on Titanic and Avatar and Avatar 2 . So I trust her heart on it.”

Fire and Ash will be Cameron’s third outing in Pandora, following 2009’s Avatar and 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water . Avatar 3 will introduce two new clans: Tlalim and Mangkwan. The Tlalim, also known as Wind Traders, are a friendly clan led by Peylak (David Thewlis). In contrast, the Mangkwan, aka the Ash People, are much more adversarial, posing a threat to Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the rest of his family.

Cameron directs Fire and Ash from a screenplay he cowrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Cameron recently confirmed that Avatar 3’s runtime is a “little bit longer” than Way of Water’s 192-minute length.

Avatar: Fire and Ash opens in theaters on December 19, 2025.

James Cameron explains why Avatar: Fire and Ash was spun-out of The Way of Water
Jake Sully in "Avatar: The Way of Water."

Later this year, Avatar: Fire and Ash will continue the saga that writer and director James Cameron began in 2009 with Avatar. But according to Cameron, the third film in the franchise was an unexpected chapter in his initial plan for three sequels. Instead, Cameron ended up splitting Avatar: The Way of Water into two different movies, in part because too much was happening in a single script.

"In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2," Cameron told Empire. "The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren't drilling down enough on character. So I said, 'Guys, we've got to split it.'"

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos paid nearly $1 billion for creative rights to James Bond
Jeff Bezos

The name's Bezos, Jeff Bezos. The Amazon CEO wanted the rights to James Bond and was willing to pay whatever it took to gain those rights.

In the wake of Amazon's acquisition of creative control over the Bond franchise, The Hollywood Reporter published a piece on Friday about the tumultuous relationship between Bezos and Bond's producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
The most prized possession in Amazon's $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM was the rights to 007. James Bond is one of the most iconic franchises in the world. Securing the intellectual property for Bond meant Amazon could expand the franchise through other avenues, mainly spinoff movies and TV series.
However, Broccoli and Wilson, who had creative control of 007, stood in the way of Amazon's IP takeover. After buying MGM, Amazon reportedly approached the Bond producers with spin-off ideas, including a series about MI6 secretary Moneypenny and CIA agent Felix Leiter. Broccoli and Wilson shot both ideas down.

Who will direct the next James Bond? Christopher Nolan, Edward Berger top list
Daniel Craig in Skyfall

James Bond now belongs to Amazon.
On February 20, Amazon MGM Studios acquired creative control of Bond from longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Wilson and Broccoli will remain co-owners of the espionage franchise and form a new joint venture to house the James Bond intellectual property rights.
With control over the franchise, expect Amazon to begin searching for the next actor to play Bond. Amazon also must find the right filmmaker to helm Bond 26. Sometimes, the most obvious choice is the right choice, and that's Christopher Nolan.
According to The Wrap, Nolan remains the "top choice and the perfect filmmaker" to tackle the next Bond movie. Nolan has been rumored to the Bond franchise for over a decade. Nolan reportedly wanted to direct a Bond movie after 2020's Tenet. However, Broccoli would not allow Nolan to have final cut, so he pivoted to making Oppenheimer, an invigorating drama that won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

“If Amazon wants to preserve the legacy, they should do everything possible to get Chris Nolan and wait for him as long as needed,” a movie producer told TheWrap.
If Amazon wants Nolan, they will have to wait until the British filmmaker finishes The Odyssey for Universal, which is currently filming and set for a theatrical release on July 17, 2026. Because Amazon must hit a home run with their first Bond movie, Amazon waiting for Nolan to finish The Odyssey before tackling Bond 26 is a safe assumption.
